Eligius, a declining urban hospital in Boston that serves destitute, downtrodden patients (the show’s name is medical-world slang for nonteaching hospitals that serve “undesirable” patients). The show was created by Joshua Brand and John Falsey (who later created Northern Exposure ) and revolved around life at St. (NBC) network, strongly influencing the style and content of subsequent medical dramas. Elsewhere aired for six seasons (1982–88) on the National Broadcasting Co. Among the most critically praised shows of the 1980s, St. Elsewhere, American television medical drama widely acclaimed for its unflinching treatment of life-and-death issues, its naturalistic visual style, and its humour.
